Illegal Migrants Dept: According to the study released Wednesday by Social Planning Toronto, only 31 of the Toronto Catholic District School Board s 201 schools said they would enroll children who lack status, according to The Star. It s very surprising that the board has a clear policy in place to accept students regardless of status, but only a small number of schools got it right, said John Campey, Social Planning Toronto s executive director. This is a wake-up call for the board to review its registration practices and make sure all front-line staff are aware of their obligations and only one in seven Toronto Catholic schools will take in children of illegal migrants, despite an Ontario law that mandates them to accept students regardless of immigration status, a new study has found. While 57 or 28.4 per cent of the schools completely denied admission for non-status children, 113 or 56.2 per cent said they did not know whether these kids could be registered in the school system.
