Toronto City Councillor Dept: Councillor Michael Thompson will introduce a motion at city council Wednesday in the wake of arrests made in the 1994 suitcase murder. The name of the 17-year-old victim, whose body was found in a burning suitcase, was only discovered after police received a tip last November. She had never been reported missing, and schools or government agencies did not know of her disappearance, according to The Star. Biddersingh s body was found in Vaughan in 1994, four years after she and her brother, Dwayne, arrived in Toronto as landed immigrants to live with her father and step-mother and a Toronto city councillor wants to monitor newly arrived children and set up an early-warning system to detect and act on immigrant child abuse. Thompson, the Jamaican consulate and other community groups are to hold an 11 a.m. news conference at Toronto City Hall on Wednesday to bring attention to the case of Melonie Biddersingh and others exposed to heart-breaking cruelties, the councillor said.
