The problem is not a small one. The Canada Brand report by Osgoode Hall Law School published in 2016 found that over the past 15 years, Canadian mining operations in Latin America have been associated with 44 deaths, 30 of which were classified as targeted. Mining companies headquartered in Canada have been implicated in human rights violations around the world, some involving egregious abuses like sexual violence, forced displacement and extrajudicial killings.
